A Pair of Cuba-Headed Aid Ships Listed Lost following Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.
Military Search and Rescue Operations Launched
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total sailors, as stated by a official statement.
The boats had been projected to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Aid to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with widespread national electricity failures.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson involved in the effort stated.
The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Earlier Humanitarian Shipment
Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.
That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and food.
Wider International Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.
Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from various officials highlighting the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
In response to certain comments, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to locate the boats and secure the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
