As Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Shows Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed pops reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a couple who had rushed up the slope soaked, she noticed someone coming up from behind. It was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He moved into something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and medical teams caring for many the injured.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the violence transforming into a temporary hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance entering the surf to save people who were struggling.

Following the events, messages of support circulated widely. One post conveyed thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a message, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our personnel,” the team stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it helps those affected.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the second the incident commenced right into late that night.

“People have shared so many emotional narratives, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
