European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
