Ghostface OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
