After a festive period packed with rich foods and relaxation, many people head into January aiming to regain their fitness momentum.

But, is it possible that AI be transforming the fitness industry by offering an alternative to human coaches?

Tailored Plans and Flexible Timelines

Leah Walsh employed an AI tool for last-minute preparation for the Cardiff Half Marathon.

This young woman hailing from a town in Wales explained she appreciated the liberty to ask it questions at all hours – something she felt was not possible with a traditional coach.

Leah relied on an AI-powered running app that provided her customized schedules with audio coaching and speed targets for her first long-distance race in 2024.

She explained she requested it to design a plan merging running and the gym, and it produced an 11-week plan tailored to her race date and objectives.

Leah then tweaked the plan to fit her lifestyle, which she said was convenient.

Subsequently, she opted for a alternative application because it was more affordable and she could consult it whenever she wanted. She finished a minute faster than her goal time.

She said she did not want the pressure from a human personal trainer.

"Using artificial intelligence you have to motivate yourself, which I actually prefer," she added.

Remarkable Fitness Improvements

In a similar case, Richard Gallimore, in his twenties, from Swansea, has been employing artificial intelligence for his fitness and diet plans, and reported he has achieved peak strength, boosting his chest press from a lower weight to 110kg.

Richard resorted to a AI assistant for assistance after being unable to run a running event.

"I just knew I need to get myself in shape," he said.

The free tool constructed a fitness and meal program personalized to his aims, and established organized workouts.

"I work out for about two hours a day and I've seen a noticeable change," he added.

The Expense Comparison: Technology vs. Conventional Training

A recent survey in the previous year analyzed costs for 17 of the biggest fitness chains and found the typical monthly fee was around £38 per month, for basic full-access plans.

Prices started at a lower price at the most affordable provider to a premium rate at the most expensive.

Based on industry research, personal trainers determine their own fees, usually a range of thirty to sixty-five pounds per hour-long appointment in most areas and about a similar range in London.

Clients typically hire a trainer once or twice a week and work with them for a short period, but these arrangements are often adaptable.

The Irreplaceable Human Touch

Fitness coach one experienced professional, from the Welsh capital, acknowledged AI can be beneficial to accelerate results, but is convinced it will not supplant the personal interaction and accountability that in-person coaching provides.

This expert, who has 12 years experience as a coach, focuses on older adults and injury rehabilitation. He said some of his trainees also employ AI.

"In my opinion it's extremely useful, more knowledge is positive," he stated.
"I believe the more that people are connected digitally the more they'll desire personal contact because they want the warmth from the comprehension that is missing from a computer," he continued.

Dafydd said AI can inform users and make coaching more effective.

But, he said true dedication comes when people show up in person for their sessions.

"No matter how helpful as it is at 2am, a digital tool won't keep you accountable at 7am before work," he concluded.

For many, he suggested, the fitness center is a space to leave phones behind and stop being glued to screens.
