Israelis have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.

A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Critical Points in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future governance of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square earlier, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home now and until each abducted person are released none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"We are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated another two dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the southern area, medics said.
