The pace bowler increased the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the field on the second morning of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson felt a problem in his left hamstring post-delivery in his spell on Saturday.
The touring camp stated the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and required time on the sidelines for further assessment "over the next few hours".
The concluding match of the series at the SCG begins on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost strike bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain during this series.
A replacement bowler was added to the party as cover for Wood.
Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, managing only three wickets.
He was omitted of the third Test, before being recalled for the fourth Test in the playing XI.
Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets with the ball, and scoring 28 runs with the bat being one of only three England players to reach double figures.
After bowling one over at the end of day one, he resumed on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.
However, towards the conclusion of that over, he sent down a variation to the batsman and immediately felt at his leg.
The English bowler returned to the side for the fourth Ashes Test after being left out the previous Test.
