SNAP Payments Set to End for Tens of Millions Throughout Prolonged Federal Shutdown
USDA officials stated on Saturday that SNAP funds through a critical national social assistance programs won't be issued during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.
Impasse Persists Into 25th Day
The funding lapse lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives asking agriculture officials to access contingency funds to cover next month's benefits.
“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.
Millions Affected
Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, as reported by federal data. Various areas, including New Mexico, use of SNAP reaches 21% of residents.
Internal communications seen by journalists revealed that the department decided against using contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.
Partisan Impasse
Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to fund and reopen the federal government.
Remarks from the leader of a prominent policy organization noted that the White House had opportunities to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.
“They had the ability and responsibility made moves before now to get ready to access these resources,” the comments added. “Rather, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a funding package that would reopen government operations.
States Prepare
State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency in recent days to free up resources for hunger relief expecting food benefits expiring in November.
