Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
