The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a memoir in the coming weeks named A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts his experience spent in jail.

This news emerged less than two weeks after the ex-leader gained freedom while he contests his conviction related to criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire election campaign funds linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he notes in a preview, indicating the book centers around his musings while in solitary confinement rather than a broader observation on the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he continues. “The din persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, he had appeared remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he had said he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to go through the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, where an innocent man is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

He was placed in solitary confinement to protect him in a space roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in Paris. Two bodyguards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he consumed only yoghurts in prison worried that any food may have been contaminated. Although he had access to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains if he will detail his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain every day during the incarceration, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail compared to inside. “There were menacing messages, heard shouts at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

He entered custody last month when a French court gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial planned for the coming spring.
