The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
