The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
