What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
